How to Keep the Score Without Freezing at the Chalkboard

Total each visit, use round-and-adjust, decomposition or column subtraction, then reverse-check the remainder before writing it.

Using an app does not automatically make paper scoring comfortable. One player reported freezing when moving from app scoring to maintaining two totals on paper. That is one self-reported experience, not evidence of how common the problem is. The practical answer is to use the same sequence after every visit rather than trying to calculate everything at once.

The five-step chalking routine

Chalking means manually calculating and recording visit scores and running totals instead of relying on an electronic scorer. Once a player has thrown three darts—or completed the visit early—use this routine:

  1. Identify and total the darts. Convert doubles and trebles into points, then add the dart values.
  2. Confirm the player. Look directly at that player’s column.
  3. Subtract the visit. Take the visit total from the player’s previous remainder.
  4. Verify the result. Add the visit back or repeat the subtraction another way.
  5. Write clearly. Record the visit and new remainder without obscuring the earlier scoring history.

Suppose Player A has 301 remaining and scores 16, 3 and 17:

  • Visit: 16 + 3 + 17 = 36
  • Subtraction: 301 − 36 = 265
  • Check: 265 + 36 = 301
  • Record: visit 36, remainder 265

Forum contributors commonly suggest totaling the completed visit before attempting the subtraction rather than changing the running score after every dart. That is community chalking advice, not a mandatory rule or a method proven to be best for everyone.

Accuracy comes before speed. A correct answer reached through several deliberate steps is better than a quick answer written in the wrong player’s column.

How to score the darts before subtracting

Convert each dart into points before adding the visit:

  • A single scores the printed number.
  • A double scores twice the printed number.
  • A treble scores three times the printed number.
  • The outer bull scores 25.
  • The bullseye scores 50.

Do the multiplication before adding the visit. For example:

T20 + D20 + S18

becomes:

60 + 40 + 18 = 118

Only then is 118 subtracted from the previous remainder.

The same process applies to ordinary singles:

16 + 3 + 17 = 36

From 301:

301 − 36 = 265

Do not try to memorize every double and treble immediately. Start with values that appear regularly—such as T20 = 60, T19 = 57, T18 = 54 and T17 = 51—and continue multiplying when recognition is uncertain.

Three reliable ways to subtract a visit

Use the one you can apply and verify reliably: direct subtraction for familiar numbers, decomposition around a multiple of 10, round-and-adjust near 100, or written column subtraction when a slower calculation feels safer.

1. Round to 100 and adjust

When the visit is close to 100, subtract 100 and add back the difference.

For 353 − 79, the difference between 79 and 100 is 21:

353 − 100 + 21 = 253 + 21 = 274

For 336 − 93, add back 7:

336 − 100 + 7 = 236 + 7 = 243

For 342 − 96, add back 4:

342 − 100 + 4 = 242 + 4 = 246

2. Decompose around a multiple of 10

Split an awkward visit into simpler parts. For 162 − 53, treat 53 as 50 plus 3:

162 − 50 = 112

112 − 3 = 109

The same idea works with other visits:

  • 47 becomes 40 + 7
  • 62 becomes 60 + 2
  • 84 becomes 80 + 4

You can also adjust in the opposite direction. For example, 47 is 50 minus 3. Whichever version you choose, keep the signs clear.

3. Use column subtraction

If mental adjustment is uncomfortable, write the calculation vertically. The conventional borrowing method for 301 − 36 = 265 is illustrated in this darts arithmetic guide:

Borrowing must pass across the zero:

  1. Borrow one hundred from 3, leaving 2 hundreds.
  2. Convert the borrowed hundred into 10 tens.
  3. Borrow one ten for the units, leaving 9 tens and 11 units.
  4. Calculate 11 − 6 = 5.
  5. Calculate 9 − 3 = 6.
  6. Calculate 2 − 0 = 2.

The result is 265.

Always reverse the calculation before writing when you are uncertain. If 353 − 79 = 274, then 274 + 79 must return 353.

A practical two-player 501 scoresheet

A useful teaching layout gives each player a visit column and a remaining-score column. It is not an official format required by every competition.

Before calculating, point to the active player’s side or silently say, “Player A’s column” or “Player B’s column.” Update only that side.

This alternating example applies the standard process of totaling a completed visit and subtracting it from the correct player’s remainder:

In this layout, the zero-score visit remains visible even though Player B stays on 456.

As practical teaching guidance, preserve enough of the previous scoring history to reconstruct the arithmetic rather than writing over it. Required layouts, correction marks and marker responsibilities can vary, so follow the rules supplied by the league, tournament or match official.

Double-out, busts, and the score that stays on the board

Under the PDC Europe rules for the described 501 format, a player must reach zero on a double. A visit that produces an invalid finish or an excessive score is a bust, and the player returns to the score held at the beginning of that visit.

Suppose the player begins on 32:

  • Valid finish: D16 scores 32 and reaches zero on a double.
  • Excessive score: Scoring more than 32 is a bust.
  • Invalid zero: Reaching zero without the required finishing double is a bust.
  • Remainder of 1: Leaving 1 cannot provide a double-out finish, so the visit is also invalid.
  • After a bust: The recorded remainder returns to 32.

Do not retain a temporary remainder reached partway through a bust visit. The scoring effect of the visit is cancelled and the pre-visit score is restored.

A teaching sheet could show the difference this way:

The exact finishing or bust notation may vary. Record it according to the competition’s rules while applying the relevant scoring mechanics.

Confirm the format before play.

How to catch and handle a chalking error

Before writing, run a five-part check:

  • Player: Am I working in the correct column?
  • Darts: Have I identified every single, double and treble correctly?
  • Visit: Do those dart values produce the announced total?
  • Subtraction: Have I used the previous remainder?
  • Reverse check: Does the new remainder plus the visit equal the old remainder?

If the darts are difficult to see, ask the player to leave them in the board briefly. That is a community suggestion rather than a universal rule. A neutral script is:

“I’m new to marking—please leave the darts in while I check that score.”

Do not guess or silently overwrite an uncertain number. State that you are checking, inspect the darts and recalculate.

For a straightforward arithmetic slip, use the correction method accepted by the event while keeping the record readable. If players disagree about what was hit, the darts have already been removed, or the issue extends beyond simple subtraction, stop and consult the match official and applicable rules. Do not assume that every competition has the same correction deadline, notation or marker authority.

There is also a difference between stating a score and suggesting a route. If a player asks what remains, you might be permitted to answer “32” without recommending “double 16.” Check the event’s rules on what the marker may announce or explain.

A measurable practice ladder from app scoring to paper

Practise the separate tasks first, then combine them. Track the result of every stage rather than judging improvement by feel.

For stages 3 and 4, also count wrong-player errors separately. An arithmetic error uses the correct player but produces the wrong total; a wrong-player error applies a calculation to the other player’s score.

Stage 1: Calculate common single-player visits

Start with recognizable combinations:

  • T20, 20, 5
  • T19, 19, 7
  • D20, D10, 5
  • 16, 3, 17

Write the value of each dart, the completed visit and the new remainder. The objective is dependable recognition, not speed.

Stage 2: Add awkward totals and adjust

Practise visits near round numbers:

  • 79 from 353
  • 93 from 336
  • 96 from 342
  • 53 from 162

Write both the calculation and reverse check:

342 − 96 = 342 − 100 + 4 = 246

246 + 96 = 342

Stage 3: Alternate two independent totals

Start Player A and Player B on 501. Choose alternating visit scores and update only the active player.

Include:

  • ordinary scoring visits;
  • zero-score visits;
  • a valid double-out finish;
  • a visit that exceeds the remainder;
  • a visit that reaches zero without a double;
  • a visit that leaves 1.

You can start from 301 when shorter imaginary legs make the exercise easier to manage.

Stage 4: Chalk simulated legs without assistance

Use paper, a chalkboard or a whiteboard to score complete imaginary 301 or 501 legs. Remove assistance gradually:

  1. Begin with the dart values shown.
  2. Progress to recognizing the segments yourself.
  3. Hide the calculated visit total.
  4. Maintain both players’ remainders unaided.
  5. Add double-out finishes and busts.

Move to the next stage when your records show consistent accuracy. There is no evidence-based need to prescribe a fixed number of days or minutes.
